Using a Linksys router can help give you added hardware firewall protection from the internet. The simplest way to connect your current pc is to use the CDROM that comes with your router. This method should give you a detail picture instruction of disconnecting your pc from the existing dsl/cable modem and reconnecting the modem and your pc to the back of the router.

As in the diagram below, the Linksys router, depending on the model, will have a network port for the WAN device (dsl/cable modem), on the far left and 4-8 network ports for your remaining devices in your network.

You first want to disconnect the network cable from the back of your pc network port, which connects to the existing dsl/cable modem, and connect it to the WAN port of the Linksys Router. You would then remove the network cable that was provided with the Linksys Router and connect one end to one the remaining ports on the Linksys Router and the other end into the network port on the back of your pc.

By default, the Linksys router is setup to issue IP (internet protocol) addresses to any device connected to it. So, from your pc's Start menu, select run and type in the word cmd. A black box known as the dos prompt should appear. Type in the command ipconfig as shown below

ipconfig

Your pc's ip address should have an ip of something similar as shown above of 192.168.1.X. This would mean that you have successfully connected your pc to your new Linksys Router.
